Fuel?
Submitted by LizKing531 on 20 August, 2013 - 17:58
Hi! My group will be traveling to Russia next month to do some fire. Louisville's sister city, Perm, has invited us to perform at their 290th anniversary festivities, along with a couple musicians & a photographer. Hopefully flying isnt an issue with props - but changed some of my wicks just in case.
Any folks from Perm around here?
What kind of fuels are available/used in Russia? & is it possible to get Coleman Fuel in Perm? I've heard some use straight gasoline, but I certainly hope not. I mainly perform with white gas-Coleman Fuel - it allows for flshing/raking & vapor tricks with fire eating that I can't get with lamp oil.

Only straight gasoline! In
Only straight gasoline!
In Russia in general all kinds of fuel are usually available, kerosine, lamp oil, white gas or gasoline 95 if someone prefers )
The lamp oil is usually refereed as Svetal (Светал), but I'm not certain if it is available in Perm. The white gas should be searched as "white spirit" (Вайтспирит). I'm not sure if you can find exactly Coleman, but something similar should not be a problem. All this is usually can be found in any tool shop or DIY market, just take a local guy with you, unless you speak Russian.
However, I advise you to try it before your performance, because the white gas may be different and quite hot by the way )
I'll try to find some locals for you.
OK thanks! white spirit, at
OK thanks! white spirit, at least in the usa, is mineral spirits. Works for sure to spin, but not sure about eating with it. On another forum, someone said Coleman/naptha was basically only found in Ukraine, really hard to find in Russia. Good to know there's lamp oil around!
What do you fire eat with? Over here, we use white gas (coleman) because you can get all the cool vapor tricks & skin transfers - I know some folks who use lamp oil, but they only extinguish torches when they eat, no tricks - plus its greasy/kinda gross in comparison (not that coleman is any good for you)
Thanks a lot!
Mmm, yes actually may be you
Mmm, yes actually may be you are right and white gas and white spirit is not the same thing ) To be honest, I'm eating fire so I don't really know what they use.
I did not find Coleman fuel even on their official web site so may be it will be really impossible to find. I'll ask some friends.
Thanks! I greatly appreciate
Thanks! I greatly appreciate your help!
There is a strange fact I've
There is a strange fact I've just learned from a friend about Perm and Lamp oil. The funny thing is that the only place where you actually can buy the lamp oil in Perm is a church
Well at least some usefulness
Good luck.
Interesting! Do you know
Interesting!
Do you know anything about shellite? I here about parts of Europe, Australia, & UK using it...
No, that's the first time I
No, that's the first time I hear it .
The problem is that in Russia, different stores provide different types of fuel, and if in Moscow, for example, you may find almost anything, I don't think it is the case in Perm )
I've googled it and did not find many options for you, so I'd advise you to be prepared to work with kerosene (i'm not sure if it is the same as what you mean by naphtha), because it is easily available everywhere, may be you will find some lamp oil in a church, but as for very specific types of fuel, I would not count on it...
However there are some different types of kerosene, may be one of them will be ok, if it is not flammable enough you may try to mix it with something like white spirit, but be careful, consult with someone who knows about it, I'm not an expert.
BTW, I noticed, that the guys on fireforum told you about aviation (avio?) kerosene... I must notice, that they must be insane, since as you may guess this kerosene is for planes, not for fire eating )) When I said kerosene,I actually meant "lighting" kerosene (осветительный керосин) i.e. kerosene for lamps (like lamp oil), which is available in any store in small bottles, not that cheap stuff in huge quantities.
Yeah - I was wondering about
Yeah - I was wondering about the aviation kero... We did contact our people in Perm, asking if they could check for us in advance. I also passed on your info on lamp oil & kero.
I'm getting super excited for this trip!
