Making my own set of fans (Type of steel ?)
Submitted by mjolnir05 on 30 December, 2012 - 12:19
Hi just wondering if you can help me on what kind/type of metal to use in making a fan's frame. I wanted to learn fans after seeing Rem's video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXkLmHw8bJU)
and considering the size of the handle, can you give me some idea on approximately how wide is the inside diameter is.
your info will really help me start to make my own fans. Thanks

Hi, the dimentions of my fans
Hi, the dimentions of my fans can be found there http://homeoffans.com/node/420
As for the metal, I don't really know, just heard that it was a kind of steel wire, but can not give you exact refference.
I'm going to visit the master who made my pair of fans today, so I'll ask him about the type of steel.
Wow, thanks for the fast
Wow, thanks for the fast reply, this will really help me a lot.
Ohh great, i'm planning to make an LED type and with the COVER like the one in your video, really inspired me to try fans! hope i can make a pair as soon as possible,
So Misha told me that the
So Misha told me that the fans are made of steel wire marked as 65Г. I guess you will need to find how does this specification corresponds to the steel marks in your country. However he mentioned that it is the same steel as used for car springs.
Good luck
Thanks rem, i will look for
Thanks rem, i will look for similar specification here in the PH, hope to see one. Will update soon how my project is progressing. Thanks again
Hi Rem, Happy new year! upon
Hi Rem, Happy new year! upon researching I found the equivalent of the steel wire marked 65Г which is steel wire A29(1566). what diameter did you used for your fans since based on the specification its diameter ranges from 0.1~16mm. Thanks in advance and i've started watching your tutorials
Question, which between the
Question, which between the two design is better for starters like me? wider or narrower fan? I also found a steel don't know what type (just seen in a local hardware) with diameter of 4mm, I might use that one for fabrication.
I'd prefer the firs one.
I'd prefer the firs one. Heavier fan is actually not such a bad thing) The diameter is something like 2-4mm, I don't have anything to measure it at my flat, so I'll tell you the exact diameter tomorrow when I get to my lab.
So I've succeeded to measure
So I've succeeded to measure it as last )
The diameter is about 2-3mm.
These photos may probably help you in your difficult task )

Got my very first fan pair
Got my very first fan pair YEY! though I use leather on the handle, when spinning, it kinda "burns" due to friction, any suggestions on what kind of cover to use on the handle so when spinning it don't burn?
Thanks so much rem for your inputs

Wow, proportions look good.
Wow, proportions look good. can take a closer photo of the handle ?
The quality of the handle in fact depends on the thickness of the leather. if it is not really thick one, it can be really annoying. However, it is normal that handle "burns" your skin little bit, especially at the beginning. Usually the handle is getting better with time due to the friction.
Here's the photo of one of
Here's the photo of one of the handle. so in time the leather wont "burn" as much in spinning in the beginning... I guess I need to spin more xD

By the way, it's really better if the inner surface of the handle is very very smooth, and it does not have these folds.
By the way, it's really
noted, i don't know why the second handle is not smooth compared to my first, maybe because of the holes i made with the leather, inconsistency with the division. will work on another leather handle when buy a new batch, i only used scrap leather.

Mjolnir05 - i can't login my account, anyway i have a question about the size of the ring(handles). is it better if your hands will easily slide in and out the ring when spinning? what are the pros and cons of having a bigger ring than your hand?

Well, in my opinion, large ring (there the diameter is bigger than palm by 1.5-2cm) is better if you do tosses, flowers, may be weaves. On the other hand smaller rings ( where diameter is just slighly bigger) are better for geometry, when you don't really spin too much, but mostry hold the fans or use "I" relation grip. So it's up to you, but I prefer smaller rings, since they are still not bad at flowers and the rest.

here's a pic of my hand in the handle.
Ever since I watched your video I really wanted to have a similar fan style as yours, weaves, tosses, and geometry. i'm watching all your tutorials and the moves here in HoF and i'm happy having results. though a little confused on when to shift to thumb spin and different grips specially in the wall plane.
